If you've already looked at the long list of books in the Snowy Plover book store, then you already know that there is more information available about sustainability that any person can read in a lifetime. Don't despair. It's not necessary for each of us to read all the books.

Fortunately, there are a number of producers and videographers creating films and videos about issues of sustainability. Many of them are available from The Video Project. Videos have a way of distilling ideas down to a form that can easily be grasped by the majority of people.

While the very latest ideas are often only available in book form, many ideas that are just a few years old have been expressed in video. We can all make enough time in our lives to watch a little television, it seems. So, why not make television-watching part of our efforts toward sustainability?

We plan to organize small groups of friends in our local community to view and discuss videos and to encourage and support each other in their personal efforts toward sustainability. We'd like to encourage you and your friends to do the same. We'll begin buying videos this Fall, and after the videos have made the local rounds, perhaps we could trade/share them with groups in other cities. Please contact us if you'd like to participate in inter-city video exchanges.

One goal is to help build a mutually supportive community of individuals seeking to adopt more sustainable lifestyles.

February 9, 1999 -- The Man Who Planted Trees (L'Homme Qui Plantait Des Arbres). Animation by Frédéric Back, Narration by Christopher Plummer, Based on a work by author Jean Giono. An uplifting story of the rejuvenation of the land and community in the French Alps in the early part of this century. Won an Academy Award as Best Animated Film.

March 2, 1999 -- Element One; Hydrogen: Key to the Sustainable Energy Revolution. A survey of the current state of the art in hydrogen fuel cells and internal combustion hydrogen engines for transportation and power generation.

March 30, 1999 -- Repeat of Element One, for those who missed it the first time.

April 6, 1999 -- Thinking Like a Watershed. Filmmaker and journalist Johan Carlisle spent two years in the remote Mattole River valley in Norther California documenting the pioneering restoration work that the local residents have been doing.

April 19, 1999 -- Diet For a New America: Your Health, Your Planet. How your food choices affect your health, ahppiness and the future of life on earth.
